It is available online at for Importance of Purchasing a Quality Blue Microphones

Blue mics are essential tools for many different types of music production. Whether you’re working on vocals drums guitars basses keyboards synths percussion horns strings etc. there’s no question that these instruments require high-quality mic preamps. In fact most professional studios utilize multiple sets of blue mics to capture each instrument individually. However while the benefits of using blue mics are numerous choosing the right ones can be difficult. Here are three tips to help you select the best blue mics for your needs.

1) Know Your Budget

Before you start shopping around for blue mics determine exactly how much money you have available to invest in audio gear. Once you’ve determined your price point shop around online and offline for the best deals. Remember you can always upgrade your equipment once you’ve saved enough money to afford it.

2) Consider Your Needs

Once you’ve decided on your budget think about what type of sound you’re trying to achieve. For example if you’re producing hip hop beats you’ll likely want to go with a cardioid pattern. Cardioids are known for being able to isolate vocals and drum kits very effectively. Conversely omnis are ideal for capturing live performances because they allow for a wider frequency response. Omnis are perfect for capturing acoustic guitar sounds which typically have a wide dynamic range.

3) Think About Your Recording Environment

Finally take into account where you plan on placing your blue mics. Will you be recording in a studio or in a small room? Do you plan on recording outdoors? How far away will you be from your subjects? All of these factors affect the kind of mic you’ll need. For instance if you’re going to record outside you’ll want to avoid supercardioid patterns. Supercards are notorious for picking up wind noise and ambient background noises. Instead opt for a figure 8 pattern.

The best way to get the most value for money is to shop around. There are many different types of microphones available today each offering its own set of features and benefits. The following list highlights some of the key factors to take into consideration when choosing a microphone.

Price – How much does the mic cost? Is there a cheaper option?

Quality – Does the mic sound good? Do you hear noise or feedback issues?

Microphone Type – Are you using a condenser dynamic or electret microphone?

Frequency Response – Does the mic respond correctly across the entire frequency range?

Pickup Pattern – Does the mic pickup sounds evenly throughout the room?

Output Level – Can you adjust the output level of the mic?

Input Sensitivity – How sensitive is the mic to input levels?

Impedance – How high is the impedance of the mic?

Sensitivity – How loud can the mic be before clipping occurs?

Noise Floor – How low is the background noise floor?

Dynamic Range – How wide is the dynamic range of the mic?

Voice Activity Detection (VAD) – Does the mic automatically detect voice activity?

Auto Gain Control (AGC) – Does the mic automatically control gain during playback?

Stereo Imaging – Does the mic provide stereo imaging?

Directionality – Does the mic capture sounds coming from specific directions?

Polar Patterns – Does the mic record audio in polar patterns?

High Pass Filter – Does the mic filter out unwanted frequencies?

Low Cut Filter – Does the mic cut out lower frequencies?

We’ve got three different types of blue mic here today – the Yeti the Yeti Pro and the Yeti HD.

The Yeti Recording Mic

This is probably the most famous mic in the world! The Yeti was originally developed for film sound recordists who needed a small lightweight and rugged microphone. It quickly became popular amongst musicians too due to its unique design and excellent performance.

It features a cardioid polar pattern (meaning it picks up sounds coming directly towards it) and a frequency response of 20Hz – 18kHz. Its sensitivity is rated at -40dBV (+0dBFS).

The Yeti comes in two versions – the original version and the pro version. Both are identical except for the fact that the pro version has a higher input impedance and therefore requires phantom power to operate correctly.

The Yeti is available in both XLR and 1/4 inch TRS connectors. The XLRs are supplied with a 3m cable while the TRS ones require a 6ft cable.

The Yeti is very versatile and can be used for many applications including vocals acoustic guitars drums percussion keyboards basses horns strings brass instruments wind instruments backing tracks etc.

The Yeti Pro Recording Mic

The Yeti Pro is essentially the same mic as the standard version apart from being slightly heavier and featuring a built-in shock mount. This makes it ideal for live performances where there could be bumps and knocks during shows.
