Buyer’s Guide

How to choose the best Daytime Running Lights

Daytime running lights (DRL) are designed to be installed on vehicles during daylight hours only. DRLs provide additional visibility to drivers while driving at night. DRLs are typically mounted on the front windshield of a vehicle. Some states require that DRLs be installed on certain types of vehicles including trucks buses and commercial motor vehicles. Other states allow DRL installation on passenger cars motorcycles and mopeds. In addition many manufacturers install DRLs on their own vehicles.

The primary reason why we need to install DRLs at night is because most accidents occur between dusk and dawn. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration there are approximately 2 million crashes involving large trucks each year. Many of these crashes happen at night due to poor lighting conditions. Another common cause of nighttime accidents is fatigue. Drivers who drive long distances at night are more likely to fall asleep behind the wheel.

Daytime running lights are designed to increase driver awareness and alertness. During the day our eyes naturally adjust to ambient light levels. However when we’re driving at night our vision becomes impaired. Our pupils dilate making us unable to see clearly. As a result we become distracted and lose concentration. Because of this we must rely on visual cues to stay awake and aware. DRLs are designed to mimic natural sunlight providing a bright source of illumination. This makes it easier for drivers to spot objects around them.

There are no downsides to installing DRLs. However there are several disadvantages to using them. First DRLs consume power. Depending on the type of bulb being used DRLs can drain anywhere from 1-2 amps per hour. Second DRLs can reduce the effectiveness of headlights. Third DRLs can interfere with the operation of other car accessories such as cruise control systems. Finally DRLs can create glare problems for other motorists.

Yes! DRLs are safe for both passengers and pedestrians. DRLs emit very little heat and pose no threat to anyone nearby. Furthermore DRLs are required by law in many countries.

Daytime running lights (DRL) are essential safety equipment for drivers who drive during daylight hours. DRLs provide visibility to motorists behind vehicles especially those driving at night. Without these lights motorists could be unaware of approaching traffic and become involved in accidents. In addition many states require that all motor vehicle operators must install DRLs on their vehicles.

Drivers rely heavily upon the ability of their headlights to illuminate the road ahead. However most modern cars lack adequate lighting systems. As a result drivers are forced to depend solely on the illumination provided by their car’s headlight bulbs. Unfortunately these bulbs only produce enough light to see objects approximately 100 feet away. Therefore drivers cannot see anything beyond that distance. This makes it difficult for drivers to detect obstacles or hazards on the roadway.

There are several advantages to using DRLs. First DRLs increase driver awareness. Second DRLs improve nighttime vision. Third DRLs reduce glare. Fourth DRLs allow drivers to identify potential problems while driving. Finally DRLs improve overall visibility. All of these benefits contribute to safer driving conditions.

Yes! Many manufacturers now include DRLs as standard equipment on newer models of automobiles. Most importantly DRLs are required by law in all 50 states. Even though there are no federal regulations regarding DRLs most states require that all vehicles manufactured after 1996 include DRLs. Additionally most states require that all vehicles manufactured after 2001 include DRLs. Some states mandate that all vehicles manufactured after 2005 include DRLs. Regardless of which state requires DRLs all states agree that DRLs are necessary for safe driving.

No! While replacing old headlamps is certainly recommended it is not mandatory. Manufacturers continue to develop brighter and more efficient lamps. Today most vehicles already include high-intensity discharge (HID) lamps. HIDs are far superior to halogen bulbs because they emit greater amounts of visible light. Also HIDs last longer and consume less power than traditional incandescent bulbs. Thus replacing old bulbs with HIDs is highly advisable.

Yes! Installing DRLs is easy. Simply remove the existing bulb and replace it with a new lamp assembly. Then attach the lens cover and tighten the screws. Once installed check the alignment of the lenses and adjust accordingly. Next test the lights to ensure proper operation. Lastly apply a coat of protective paint to the lenses to prolong their lifespan.

Features To Look For When Buying A Daytime Running Lights?

Daytime running lights (DRL) are essential safety equipment for drivers who drive during daylight hours. DRLs provide visibility to motorists behind vehicles equipped with these devices. The most common type of DRL is the brake-activated headlight which automatically turns on whenever the vehicle brakes. Other types include turn signals tail lights stop lamps fog lights and backlights.

Types of Brake Activated Headlights

There are two main types of brake activated headlights; those that activate only when braking and those that activate both when braking and turning. Some manufacturers produce both types of headlights. Most modern cars have automatic activation systems that turn on the headlights when the car slows down. However there are still many vehicles available today that require driver intervention to activate the headlights.

Benefits of Brake Activated Headlights

Brake activated headlights improve road safety because they increase the distance between the front of the vehicle and the rear of the vehicle. In addition they reduce glare for drivers following closely behind the vehicle. Drivers using brake activated headlights see objects further away and therefore have a greater field of vision.

The brake lights on a vehicle illuminate when the brakes are applied. As soon as the brakes are released the lights go dark again. Many newer models of automobiles have sensors that detect when the brakes are being pressed. Once the sensor detects pressure on the brake pedal it sends a signal to the lighting control module. The lighting control module activates the headlights based on the amount of pressure detected.

Advantages of Automatic Brake Activated Headlights

Automatic brake activated headlights eliminate the need for drivers to manually operate the headlights. Therefore they allow drivers to concentrate on driving rather than operating the headlights. Additionally automatic brake activated headlights conserve battery power since they do not continuously shine bright lights while the vehicle is stationary.

Disadvantages of Automatic Brake Activated Headlights

Some drivers dislike the fact that automatic brake activated headlights turn on when the vehicle stops. Others complain that the headlights remain illuminated even though the vehicle has stopped.

Different Types of Daytime Running Lights

Daytime running lights (DRL) are essential safety equipment for drivers who drive during daylight hours. DRLs provide visibility to motorists behind you while driving at night. The most common type of DRL is the brake light which flashes red when activated. Other types include turn signals tail lights back-up lights fog lamps and hazard flashers. All these devices must be installed correctly and maintained properly to ensure safe operation.

Types of Brake Light Systems

There are two main types of brake light systems: mechanical and electrical. Mechanical brakes consist of a series of levers connected to a cable that activates the brake pedal. Electrical braking consists of a switch inside the vehicle that connects to the battery. Both methods activate the same brake pedal; however there are differences between the two. For example mechanical brakes require constant maintenance because the cables wear out over time. In contrast electrical brakes only require periodic inspection and replacement of bulbs.

Electronic Brakes

Electronic brakes are becoming increasingly popular due to their convenience and ease of installation. However electronic brakes are prone to failure. Because they rely on electronics rather than physical parts they are susceptible to power surges short circuits and faulty wiring. Therefore it is important to check the condition of your brake system regularly. Also always replace worn components immediately to avoid costly repairs.

Drivers use their brake lights to alert others of their intentions. Most states require that vehicles display three different colored lights. The front brake lights are required to flash continuously. The rear brake lights are required to flash intermittently. Finally the left side marker lights are required to flash alternately whenever the driver turns on his/her signal. Failure to comply with state regulations could result in fines and penalties.

Tail Lights

The tail lights are located on both sides of the car. Tail lights serve several purposes including signaling to following traffic providing illumination and indicating direction of travel. Many states require that tail lights remain illuminated at all times except when parked. Some states require that tail lights illuminate automatically when the ignition key is turned on. Others require that tail lights stay lit unless the headlights are turned on. Regardless of the requirements tail lights must be inspected periodically to ensure proper function.

Back-Up Lamps

Back-up lamps are designed to assist drivers backing up. Back-up lamps are typically mounted on the trunk lid or hood of the vehicle. They are intended to warn approaching cars of the presence of the vehicle being backed up. To operate safely back-up lamps must be visible to oncoming traffic. Additionally they must be able to withstand extreme temperatures and weather conditions. Back-up lamps are generally powered by 12 volts DC.
