Different Types of Dust Collectors

Dust collection systems are designed to collect particulate matter (dust) from air streams. The most common types of dust collectors include baghouse filters cyclones electrostatic precipitators and wet scrubbers. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages. In general however each type collects particles ranging between 0.1 microns and 10 microns in diameter. Particles smaller than 0.1 microns are called ultrafine particles; those between 1-10 microns are known as coarse particles; and anything greater than 10 microns is considered fine dust.

Baghouses

The simplest form of dust collector is a baghouse filter. Baghouses consist of large bags filled with granular media. As air passes through the bags the dust falls into the bottom of the bag where it is collected. Baghouses are inexpensive easy to maintain and effective at removing small amounts of dust. However baghouses cannot remove very fine dust because the dust particles pass right through the bags. Also baghouses require frequent replacement of the bags due to wear caused by constant exposure to high velocity airflows.

Cyclones

In contrast to baghouses cyclone separators trap dust particles using centrifugal force. Cyclones operate by forcing air through a cylindrical chamber containing a series of vanes. Air enters the top of the cylinder and spirals around the inside wall of the chamber. As the air rotates the heavier particles fall toward the center of the chamber while lighter particles remain suspended in the airstream. At the end of the chamber the separated particles exit the cyclone via a discharge chute. Because cyclones are able to capture both fine and coarse particles they are commonly used in conjunction with baghouses.

Electrostatic Precipitator

An electrostatic precipitator uses electricity to attract charged particles from the air stream. Electrostatic precipitators contain two electrodes which create an electric field across the airflow path. Charged particles become attracted to the positive electrode and are deposited onto the negative electrode. After collecting enough dust the electrodes are cleaned and recharged.
