1. PCI Express Type 1/Type 2

PCI Express (also known as PCIe) is a standard interface developed by Intel and Microsoft for connecting peripheral components to motherboards. It was designed to replace the previous ISA bus technology. As a result, most modern motherboards support both PCI Express and ISA buses. However, the newer versions of PCI Express, namely version 3.0 and above, are backward compatible with earlier versions of PCI Express. Therefore, you can install a PCI Express x16 slot into a motherboard supporting only PCI Express x4 slots.

The advantage of PCI Express is that it offers higher bandwidth compared to ISA bus. With PCI Express, data transfer rates increase exponentially as the number of lanes increases. So, while a 4 lane PCI Express x16 slot has four times the bandwidth of a PCI Express x4 slot, a 8 lane PCI Express x16 slot has eight times the bandwidth of a PCI Express x8 slot.

However, since PCI Express uses high voltage power supplies, it requires additional circuitry inside the motherboard to regulate the supply voltages. Thus, the overall size of the motherboard becomes larger. Another disadvantage of PCI Express is that it supports only 16 bits per pixel color depth. While 32 bits per pixel color depth is supported by VGA, DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort, etc., it cannot be supported by PCI Express.

In addition, PCI Express connectors are physically wider than those found on ISA bus. Hence, the physical dimensions of the connector become bigger. This results in increased cable lengths required to connect peripherals to the motherboard. Furthermore, due to the large width of the connectors, the cables themselves are thicker. This causes problems when trying to route the cables behind the chassis. Finally, the price of PCI Express adapters tends to be higher than that of ISA based ones.
