Buyer’s Guide

How to choose the best Outlet Covers

An outlet cover protects outlets from dust and dirt. It prevents dust and dirt from entering into the electrical socket. Dust and dirt can cause short circuits which could result in fire or electrocution. In addition it makes it easier to see where wires go because there is no mess around the plugs.

How To Use An Outlet Cover

To install an outlet cover remove the screws holding the plate onto the outlet box. Then slide the cover over the outlet. Screw back in the screws and tighten them securely. Make sure the cover fits snugly over the outlet. Do not put too many screws in the holes. Too many screws can weaken the cover and allow moisture to enter inside the cover.

Outlets get dusty and dirty very quickly. Over time the dust accumulates and causes problems. For example dust buildup can block the opening of the outlet making it difficult to insert a plug. Also dust can accumulate on the faceplate causing corrosion and eventually leading to failure of the outlet. Finally dust can be inhaled and lead to respiratory illness. So it is important to regularly clean the outlet cover.

Most hardware stores sell outlet covers. However you can also order them online. There are several different types of outlet covers available. Some are designed specifically for outdoor use while others are suitable for indoor use. Most covers are made of plastic and metal. Metal covers are generally stronger and last longer than plastic ones. Plastic covers are cheaper and lighter weight. But they are prone to cracking and breaking.

Outlets are very important parts of our homes. We rely on these outlets to provide us with electricity. However many times we neglect to take care of these outlets because we think they’re only there to power appliances. But did you know that these outlets are actually designed to be decorative pieces too? In fact they serve two purposes – providing electrical current and adding style to your home!

In order to understand why outlets are meant to be decorative let’s start with the basics. An outlet has three main components: 1) the cover plate; 2) the pronged metal piece called the receptacle; 3) the cord itself. All three of these elements must be present in order for an outlet to function properly.

Cover Plate

The cover plate serves several functions. First it protects the receptacles inside from being damaged. Second it prevents moisture from entering into the interior of the outlet. Third it acts as a base for the entire outlet assembly. Finally it gives the outlet its aesthetic appeal. Without a cover plate the outlet would appear unfinished and unappealing.

Prongs

Next we talk about the prongs. Prongs are the metal bars that protrude from the backside of the outlet. These prongs allow the outlet to receive electric current. Without prongs the outlet could not deliver electricity to devices plugged into it.

Cord

Finally we discuss the cord. Cords are the wires that connect the outlet to the appliance. Most cords are covered in plastic and contain multiple strands of wire. Each strand contains four individual wires. Two of those wires carry alternating current (AC) while the remaining two carry direct current (DC). AC currents flow in opposite directions meaning that the positive side of the circuit flows towards the negative pole of the outlet. DC currents flow in one direction which means that the positive side of the circuit always flows towards the positive pole of the outlet.

Outlets are very important parts of our homes. We rely heavily on electricity to power everything around us. In fact most appliances require electrical current to operate. However there are times where outlets get damaged due to accidents or wear and tear. The good news is that these problems can be fixed quite easily. All you need to do is replace the damaged part of the outlet with a new one. But which type of outlet cover should you go for? Here are some features to look for when choosing an outlet cover.

Size Matters

The first thing you should check is the size of the outlet cover. Most outlets today are designed to fit into standard-sized boxes. So if you’re replacing a box you’ll probably need a matching sized cover. Otherwise you could end up with a bulky piece of plastic that looks ugly and takes up too much room. Also remember that smaller covers are easier to handle and install. So if you’re installing a small outlet cover you’ll only need a screwdriver and maybe a pair of pliers. Whereas if you’re replacing a large box you’ll likely need a drill hammer screws and possibly a saw.

Material Matters

Another factor to take into consideration is the material of the outlet cover. Some materials are stronger than others. For example metal covers are generally sturdier than plastic ones. Metal covers are also easy to repair because you can cut away the damaged section and weld it back together. Plastic covers however are cheaper and lighter weight. So if you’re going to be using the outlet cover frequently you’d probably want to opt for a plastic one. Remember though that plastic covers are still strong enough to hold up to regular household usage. Just make sure you avoid putting heavy objects on top of them.

Durability

Finally durability is another key factor to consider. How long does the outlet cover last? Will it withstand normal wear and tear? Do you plan on storing it somewhere outside? Is it waterproof? Does it have a locking mechanism? Are its corners rounded?

Different Types of Outlet Covers

Outlets are found everywhere around us; in our homes offices restaurants hotels etc. The outlets provide power to devices such as lamps fans computers phones televisions refrigerators air conditioners heaters microwaves coffee makers hair dryers irons electric shavers etc. In order to ensure safety and security these electrical outlets must be covered properly. There are different types of outlet covers available in the market today.

Wall plate cover – Wall plate covers are designed to fit into the holes of the wall plate. They are easy to install and remove. However they cannot be removed while the electricity is still running. Therefore they are best suited for indoor applications only.

Plug cover – Plug covers are designed to fit onto the plugs of the electrical sockets. They are very useful because they allow you to change the type of socket switch) without removing the cover. For example you could replace the standard three-pronged plug with a four-pronged plug which has two grounding prongs. Thus you can connect multiple appliances using a single plug.

Flush mount cover – Flush mount covers are installed directly into the walls. They are ideal for outdoor installations where there is no room for mounting a box or panel. They are also suitable for commercial settings where aesthetics are important.

Panel mount cover – Panel mounts are mounted inside the panels of the electrical boxes. They are generally used for residential purposes. They are typically made of plastic and metal. Some models include locking mechanisms to secure the cover in position.

Box mount cover – Box mount covers are designed to fit into the openings of the electrical boxes. They are commonly used for both residential and commercial applications. They are made of either plastic or metal. Most box mount covers are secured with screws.

Cable wrap – Cable wraps are used to hide exposed wires and cables. They are available in many colors and styles. They are especially helpful in hiding unsightly wiring behind furniture or cabinets.
