Paul Stamets has been called “the most important mushroom person” ever. He was born in Seattle Washington in 1950. His father was a professor of botany and his mother worked as a secretary. As a child he loved mushrooms and collected them. At age 12 he began working in a local restaurant where he learned to cook wild mushrooms. After high school he went to college and studied biology. In 1976 he received his Phd degree in Microbiology. While studying he met mycologist Rene Caillouet who introduced him to the study of fungi. He has written many articles and books including Mycelium Running which became a New York Times bestseller. He has appeared on television shows such as Oprah Winfrey Show and Larry King Live. He has lectured around the country and spoken at universities and conferences. He has given lectures at Harvard University Yale University Cornell University Stanford University MIT Columbia University and the Smithsonian Institution among others. He has served as president of the American Society For Microbiology and the International Association of Culinary Professionals. He has published several books including Mushrooms Demystified (with John Kallas) How To Grow Morels Edible and Medicinal Mushrooms Growing Gourmet & Medicinal Mushrooms Mushroom Cultivation Made Easy and The Mushroom Hunters Guidebook. He has been featured in hundreds of magazine articles and newspaper columns. He has been interviewed by National Public Radio CBS News NBC Nightly News ABC World News Tonight CNN BBC CBC Discovery Channel Food Network PBS and many other media outlets. He has been awarded honorary doctorates from the University of California Berkeley the University of Oregon and the University of British Columbia. He has been named one of the top 100 living scientists by Discover Magazine. He lives in Olympia WA with his wife son daughter-in-law and two cats.
